In Costa Rica, they can take the form of everything from toucans (think crows with giant shark inspired beaks) to herons and monkeys. The rails did indeed come to investigate but came up empty-beaked. They don’t need to be professional bird killers either, predators only need to be in the right place at the right time.

Even if you don’t live in the summer range of a particular species, you may have opportunities to observe it while it passes through, especailly if you live in an active flyway, like I happen to. People were doing things like that with birds, sharks, and humans. Another question this raises has to do with migration itself.
