The only cool thing is that Gene Bauer's views on the meat industry are so similar to those expressed on this blog a few weeks ago. Humane treatment runs counter to the entire industry when the point is to make money by processing these animals as fast as possible. No wonder there is so much "farm" animal abuse out there.

Ausubel expresses pessimism about the ability of humans to change their diets from environmentally destructive meat-based diets to environmentally sustainable plant-based diets on the grounds that the desire for meat is somehow hard-wired into "our little snake brains." The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. In my opinion, and I am a vegetarian, the second definition of humane is the MINIMAL that we should expect. He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner.
