Today is the United Nations World Wildlife Day, a time to celebrate and raise awareness of the living world around us. I would love to find myself next to a Blue Whale , compared to which I am as miniature as that brave mouse was next to me, to be small and humble in admiration of the greatest animal on the planet.

The list kinds crystalized during my first big trip, on which I knocked off my two big targets (the manta ray and whale shark) but since then beyond seeing an antelope (and then many other different kinds), it hasn’t budged much at all. I have been to 11 countries to watch wildlife that this species lives in. A beaked whale.

I was lucky to visit India several times, but as a keen birder I carried along only a bird book, and even upgraded it to a new edition between the trips. Beside India, Lynx Illustrated Checklist of the Mammals of South Asia covers Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. I clearly needed a mammal book.

I birded savannas of Southern Africa, I birded India and Central America, and I always missed having a local mammal guide with me. Larger species, that is, excluding dolphins and whales. Yes, field guides to other groups of organisms, as there’s hardly any room left in your baggage or the energy to carry it.
