As we get a little farther north, my target list for bird species has diminished a bit, as there are a lot of repeats, and not many new bird opportunities. Idaho has been very much that sort of exploring.

What is the State Bird of Nevada?

The Mountain Bluebird is one of the most striking birds in the United States, and is the state bird of both Nevada and Idaho. Historically, Mountain Bluebirds nested in tree cavities created by woodpeckers, but now more commonly choose artificial nest boxes. They let schoolchildren vote too, which must have been a fun class exercise!

There were not as nearly many birds around the area as in past visits, but the number of species that were using the water as either a summer home, or just passing thru in the early parts of their migration made the visit well worth it. The Last Few Rays Before Extinction

When a species as prolific as the passenger pigeon once was ultimately expires, and promptly so on March 24, 1900, I’m apt to consider the rare but exceptional future sighting as a possibility, simply because I like to believe birds, or other creatures for that matter, don’t necessarily die within our specific time frames.
