I am not anti-hunting. I won’t pick a fight with hunters, as long as they eat what they shoot and don’t use lead ammunition. The “Crow Down” is a “hunting contest” where both adults and children slaughter as many crows as they possibly can in two days. Plain old fashioned Fun.”. So how do you classify these contests?

To the Editor: In “ Hunting Deer With My Flintlock ” (Op-Ed, Dec. 26), Seamus McGraw says he has a responsibility to kill deer because there are too many. He has volunteered to kill a deer cruelly, ineptly and with an outdated weapon that causes additional suffering to the deer. Animals suffer when killed.

Regarding deer: The harm caused by overcrowding of deer herds on limited available lands, to both the deer and humans, is well documented in the scientific literature, which also documents the fact that controlled hunting is not only the most cost effective way to deal with the problem, but the only really effective way as well.

If you have never been to Hawk Mountain , Pennsylvania during fall migration I would strongly recommend a visit. Hunters flocked to the Kittatinny Ridge to literally blast raptors out of the sky, buoyed by the belief that they were doing the world a great service. Raptors were perceived to be vermin.
