Not sure why they spend time in Shanghai in winter when they could come here though, but then again, I usually do not understand most of the behavior of humans either. With a picture of the then-queen of Thailand on it, if I remember correctly. Yes, we have them in Shanghai as well. At between 4 pm and 6 pm, to be exact.

I very much enjoyed the first section, which relates the history of the bird and its relationship with us, humans, from its discovery in 1851 up to the fateful Lake Mack fire and its aftermath in the 1980’s. Rapai is clearly fascinated by Leopold’s life, and frankly, so was I.

I got to see a beautiful female and owlet on a trip to a secret nest location near Howard Prairie Lake (human-made nest structures have enhanced local breeding for these huge owls whose nest success is boosted to 83% on artificial platforms vs. 66% at natural sites).
