She has a captive-bred education bird named Xena, a Eurasian Eagle Owl. They were not aware of wildlife laws, and thought they could raise and release them. I very much enjoyed the first section, which relates the history of the bird and its relationship with us, humans, from its discovery in 1851 up to the fateful Lake Mack fire and its aftermath in the 1980’s. One of the strange things about the Kirtland’s Warbler story is the participation of Nathan Leopold, Jr.
