Best Bird of the Year for 2015

During my previous five trips to Indonesia, I only heard but never caught a glimpse of three species. “Spooked” is a bit of a strong word as I was very likely the first human this bird had ever seen and it stuck around for quite a while merely five metres away from me. I love participating in citizen science!

In contrast, the females need to make sure not to get duped into raising actual cuckoos – the buntings are a targeted host species ( source ). Weirdly, this bird is also described as a common pest in Indonesia, responsible for substantial losses of rice. Possibly a survivor of siblicide (which would make it a killer, right?).
