Clearly a win for the damn livestock industry. A state law mandating "humane treatment" of downed livestock headed for the slaughterhouse was unanimously overturned Monday by the Supreme Court. It was a question of federal vs. state authority. And it was a unanimous decision. Read the full story at CNN.

The only cool thing is that Gene Bauer's views on the meat industry are so similar to those expressed on this blog a few weeks ago. Humane treatment runs counter to the entire industry when the point is to make money by processing these animals as fast as possible. No wonder there is so much "farm" animal abuse out there.

I'm sure we could do a much better job of ensuring the humane treatment of our laboratory animals--but at this point it's very difficult even to start the discussion. It "guarantees humane treatment?" But the entire industry is questionable. Maybe on paper. Part IV: Brown Dogs and Red Herrings.

We pay lip service to more humane treatment of the animals that we eat, but how many of us look beyond the label on the package of chicken cutlets? If people had to see what these animals are subjected to or take an active role in their deaths, I believe many more people would think before they eat.
