Volunteer Moya Kinnealy reached in nearly to her elbow and removed four tiny Red-bellied Woodpeckers. After a similar procedure, Moya’s watch-me-pull-a-rabbit-out-of-my-hat trick produced a fuzzy nestling Eastern Screech Owl. Imagine the nocturnal owls trying to sleep… ‘I told you we shouldn’t have moved near those woodpeckers!’

While it is laudable to point out the plight of homeless woodpeckers, this is hardly the right subject for an upbeat bird photo contest. There are much better metaphors for mind-body dualism than owls with fake eyes on the backside of their head. Every bird photo should tell a story, not just show a bird.
