Snow Geese in Florida

The Sunshine State isn’t known for its massive snow drifts, nor for the massive flocks of Snow Geese that grace states like Texas and New Mexico every winter. Every year they migrate down to this Gulf Coast protected area, giving me the opportunity to observed Redheads, Hooded Mergansers, scaups, Ring-necked Ducks , and more.

Instead, they are summer visitors, moving up to Colorado in the warm months to breed before returning to wintering grounds in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and Mexico. Unlike many other official birds, the Lark Bunting is not a year-round resident.

A Colorful Finch in Colorful Colorado

Their range of breeding is literally only very southern Wyoming to very northern New Mexico. Having said that, Colorado has done a wonderful job of protecting habitat and since this species breeds on super high cliffs there is no true threat to habitat destruction. Thus, Colorado encapsulates most of their breeding range.
