The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit recently heard arguments in National Meat Association v. Brown, a case in which the meat industry is attempting to invalidate a California law designed to reduce animal suffering and protect public safety. Did anyone know this was going on?

Animal rights groups are calling for a ban on the sale of horse meat after disturbing video at a slaughterhouse in west Quebec was sent to the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition. Under Canadian laws, one shot is supposed to render the horse unconscious but it often doesn't happen. Excerpted from CTV.CA.

Quebec is not known for its animal welfare concerns or laws. I think the issue stems from this being an Islamic practice and the fear of contaminated meat, not concern for the animals. The pro-independence party said it was worried that mainstream companies are selling halal meat without labeling to unsuspecting consumers.

This could halt production of kosher and halal meat in the Netherlands – and lead to similar campaigns in other European countries. However, Jewish and Islamic groups which can prove animals do not suffer more during ritual killing than in an ordinary slaughterhouse will be able to apply for permits.

And no amount of donations to groups that supposedly want to abolish animal cruelty is going to make up for the fact that until you stop having animals killed for you you are part of the problem. They're from a legal farm in Illinois, so the law isn't the reason. I was curious about why it's so terrible to eat lions.

The shark is thrown back because shark fins are often more valuable than the meat itself. While there are laws in place protecting endangered species of shark from shark finning, international waters are rarely regulated when it comes to the practice. In fact, dried shark fin can go for as much as $300 a pound or more.
