This places feels almost as if herds of zebra and giraffe are just out of view. Well, the Latin name of the species is Tyrannus savana and what better savanna to photograph it in than the Rupununi? The Pakaraima mountains slowly materialize from the darkness, silently encircling the flatness of the savanna.

Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay welcomed a new baby female reticulated giraffe on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. A giraffe’s gestation period is 15 months, and the mother and baby will be kept out of view for the first three months so they can be watched closely. At 5 foot, 7 inches tall and weighing approximately 127 pounds!

Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay recently welcomed two more baby giraffes, bringing the herd to 17! The giraffes joined the rest of the heard on the Serengeti Plain on July 13th. What is neat about giraffes is that it is common for other members of the herd to become involved with the care of newborns. And they are super cute too!

So far we have seen Impala, Duiker, Greater Kudu, Mongoose, Zebra and warthogs around the neighborhood, and yard. In the same first day plus a couple of hours, my Africa bird count is at 66 species. The house is a four bedroom, four bath two story, with a deck running around three sides of the upper story, great for wildlife viewing.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay welcomed a new baby reticulated giraffe just days ago. The addition brings Busch Gardens’ giraffe population to 15. A giraffe’s gestation period is approximately 15 months, and the new baby will nurse for about one year. The term “reticulated” refers to the giraffe’s net-like pattern of spots.

Betty’s Bay was also a great place to see all of South Africa’s cormorant species, including the endangered Bank Cormorant. We observed far fewer Lesser Flamingos, a near-threatened species. It was the first of six bustard species I would see over the course of both trips. And then there were the Flamingos.

Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!
