And when she did have time for Hamlet, Emmie cried and pleaded with her mom to take him to the vet. As if the vet had a cure for old age. I would take him to my house that evening since the Vet was closed.

The whole process had taken four hours. I felt so sorry for the poor thing—we had to call our vet out to sedate him—so I decided to take him home as a foster. It showed Fizzle, white fur gleaming, red bow in his topknot, sitting on the lap of a woman who, like Barb, looked as if she hadn’t lived an easy life.
