Godlewski’s Bunting is an attractive bunting species with a rather broad distribution in Russia, Mongolia, China, and other countries. Europeans must use these to come and bear away in the name of civilization all these dregs of the human race. Admittedly, the issue is more serious for Przevalski’s Pinktail.

My childhood in the 1970s and 1980s was of course shaped by family, friends, playmobil ( very popular in Germany back then), and school but also to a certain extend by the Cold War. As a kid I still understood little of world politics, but I understood very well that all the countries behind the Iron Curtain were off-limits to me.

A few do breed in Europe, on the extreme north-east of European Russia. The latter is half the size of the Grey, but with its stout beak and prominent eyes shows a distinct family likeness. These were dark-bellied birds from Russia. A single Ringed Plover was keeping the Grey Plover company, allowing me to compare the two.

For some reason, the largest member of the heron family is not called the Great Heron nor the Giant Heron but rather the Goliath Heron. The shrike family (Laniidae) has two genera, one (Lanius) with 32 species and one (Eurocephalus) with 2 species. Consistency is overrated. With Red-billed Quelea. Kind of like Dresden, I guess.
