Nearly 2,500 square miles of the wildest sections of the Omo Valley are protected in the almost contiguous Omo National Park on the river’s west bank (Ethiopia’s largest park) and Mago National Park on the east bank. Quality time was spent with a friendly Hamar family at their homestead of grass huts surrounding their cattle corral.

As the national bird of Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, the African Fish Eagle is usually very busy whenever it stays in these countries, giving speeches, opening shopping centers, etc. Reportedly, the Water Thick-knee sometimes locates its nest close to the nest of Nile crocodiles as this offers some protection.

In spite of this New Zealand does have an iconic family of birds that has served as an emblem for the country for over a century, the kiwi. They are commonest where they are intensively protected and managed, but these places are often remote and hard to visit. They would all be wrong, as New Zealand has no official National Bird.

Although this park was logged in the past, as a national park it is one of the few forests in Ghana that is really protected. . These strange birds are two species in their own family; White-necked or Yellow-headed, endemic to the Upper Guinea forests and Grey-necked or Red-headed, restricted to Lower Guinea forests.
