I served on the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production, which released a report in 2008 that detailed exactly how much these “efficiencies” are costing America. Farm Animal Welfare, ASPCA New York, Feb. The idea that eggs from free-range chickens are somehow morally superior to other eggs is, frankly, weird.

We eat animals, and the CAFO system is an evil, filthy, cruel one, but it doesn't have to be that way. The moral of the story is that it's all about the way we farm animals, not that we farm them that is what needs changing. Then they yank the heads, slit the throats, and de-feather and gut the chickens.

The fury this meal caused my friends and family back in America motivated me to examine whether eating any animal was justified. My interactions with farm animals have been as affectionate and fun as any I've had with dogs or cats. In the name of moral consistency I became a vegetarian four years ago.
