Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!

This time I’ll be working with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, helping that NGO monitor wildlife in a range of reserves and parks in the east of South Africa. Volunteering provides a very different experience to tourism though.

I don’t really know – from my own experience with school bullies or from Jack London’s novels? Illustrated with drawings by the author’s wife, wildlife artist Catherine Putman, “Understanding Animal Behaviour” has 178 pages. Zebra finch, Taeniopygia (Poephila) guttata. How did I know that? Shoveler, Northern, Anas clypeata.

Great wildlife preserves, reserves and parks exist for a number of reasons. But I think it should be on the list of anyone that wants a knockout experience to share with non-birders. I stayed with Mosetlha Bush Camp and would highly recommend them for a unique bush experience. After the day of animals, a drink as the sun sets.
