They were different from previous guides, notably Peterson’s, utilizing photographs instead of artwork, and organizing the photographs by habitat, bird shape, and bird color rather than taxonomy. Species Accounts are organized taxonomically. It’s excess information that I think will only confuse beginning birders.

Bird communication is a complex and evolving science. I wish there was more discussion of research techniques and resources. It would love to read more about the ethical considerations that go into using playback for research purposes and how federal rules against playback affect research design.

Birding for the Curious: A Book Review

Finding owls is the occasion to discuss the ethics of playback. This makes for an attractive looking book, but I do think that the page space could have been put to better use, maybe for a listing of the resources (organizations, field guides, citizen science websites) recommended throughout the book.

The result is a really good read, a suspenseful true-crime narrative that reads like a novel yet also probes real-life questions focused on the purpose of natural history museum collections and the ethics of closely gated “hobbyist” communities. Simon Baron-Cohen, cousin to the comedian. Mostly adult males. And, well researched.
