The idea of family is currently being used by the dairy industry in a series of commercials with the tag line: "99% of dairy farms are family owned." Buying dairy products supports them. Ninety-nine percent of dairy farms are family owned. Yes, factory farms are the stuff of nightmares for nonhuman animals.

as I was running this morning, I couldn't help wonder what the difference is between his book and The Compassionate Carnivore and the myriad others written by people who despise factory farming, yet claim to love animals (and of course love their "meat," and find a way to get it while not feeling bad about it).

The good news is that if you know someone who needs to be schooled on all of the sordid details of factory farming, and appreciates good writing, this is a great book. And what follows, as you might imagine, is his support of "ethical meat" (for those who insist on eating animals). Ever, in fact. But why does he say "vegetarian?"
