I’m sure most of you know that the Peregrine Falcon became an endangered species because of the use of organochlorine pesticides, especially DDT, during the 1950′s, 60′s, and 70′s. In responding to Suzie’s post defending wildlife rehabilitation I began to think again about the areas in which animal rights and animal welfare overlap with the field of conservation, and the ways in which they don’t. People would often express surprise that I, someone that cared about wildlife conservation, would eat meat.

If birders are willing to spend so much money in the pursuit of birds, it seems some would be willing to spend some on protecting them as well…right? They have suffered from competition with Blue-winged Warblers (including hybridizing), forest succession, and parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds. Shocking, I know.
