Here's my response on medical research in general. I recently had a discussion about medical research using animals. Many people feel very uncomfortable with animal testing, even scientists I think, which is why they often get so emotional and defensive about their research. Perhaps it was a necessary “evil.”

I particularly question the use of chimpanzees in medical research. How smart does a chimpanzee have to be before killing him constitutes murder? I recently was escorted through a large primate research laboratory by its director. Like other mammals, they are capable of strong emotions.

This one addresses the decreasing number of dogs and cats being experimented on and, without mentioning it, discusses speciesism and our affection for dogs--pet dogs particularly (and especially purebreds)--which leads to our revulsion with the idea of snatching, vivisecting and killing them. It does not make them more or less a "tool."
