Dedicated keepers at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Nairobi Elephant Nursery in Kenya protect baby Shukuru from the cold and rain, and the risk of pneumonia, with a custom-made raincoat. A mobile vet unit was able to tranquilize her, clean her wounds, and extract the spear.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).

So far we have seen Impala, Duiker, Greater Kudu, Mongoose, Zebra and warthogs around the neighborhood, and yard. The house is a four bedroom, four bath two story, with a deck running around three sides of the upper story, great for wildlife viewing.

An afternoon in the Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

The dirt road winds in between rocky outcrops – kopjes, by Burchell’s Zebras and Greater Kudus. A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. This game reserve has 900 elephants – the second largest population in South Africa, after the Kruger National Park with 13,000.

But, the anticipation of everyone else in the group was contagious, and when California birder Lori Conrad looked out the window of the plane as we started our descent and screamed, “Elephants! There are elephants down there!” I burst into applause with the rest of the plane. Sadly, we weren’t able to join them or the leopard.
