Yala National Park is brimming with wildlife and there are good chances of seeing Leopard , Sloth Bear and Asian Elephant , while it is also excellent for dry-zone birds, while the nearby Bundala coastal marshes and Palatupana ponds are good spots for shorebirds.

The next isolated populations are several thousand miles northwards in Malawi, northern Mozambique and the Rondo Plateau in southern Tanzania. Other more fanciful discoveries on his journey included the Ivory-Eater (Sciurus eborivorus), a squirrel with huge gnawing teeth that scours the rainforest in search of elephant carcasses!

Northern Carmine Bee-eater riding an Arabian Bustard by Markus Lilje/Rockjumper Birding Tours Northern Carmine Bee-eaters in particular are masters of this trait, and rides range from elephants, donkeys and goats to Kori and Arabian Bustards, Abyssinian Ground Hornbills and a variety of other larger birds and mammals.

In 1856 Wahlberg was killed by an Elephant near Lake Ngami in Botswana without ever publishing an account of his travels, but fellow Swede Carl Sundevall catalogued his collection at the Stockholm Museum and described the birds Wahlberg collected. The nearest population to them is several thousand miles north in Malawi and southern Tanzania.
