Once the private hunting preserve of the Maharaja of Bharatpur, this fabulous wetland gave us a list of over ninety species in a very relaxed day on a recent trip!

Even without being on the water it was possible watch birds across the river, as evidenced by my lifer pair of African Pygmy Geese , which flew down the river and landed on the Namibian side. The river cruises up the Chobe River are most famous for the dry season aggregations of African Bush Elephants drawn to the year-round water.

It is also home to the largest concentration of African Elephants on the planet and over 450 bird species. Specials include birds like African Pygmy Geese, Racket-tailed Roller and Western Banded Snake-eagle. The diversity of birds here is so staggering that 300 species of birds have been recorded here in a single day.

American Kestrels, Cooper Hawks , and Northern Harriers also found the hunting here to their liking. A small group of Canada Geese fly over, and out in front of their formation was a pair of Sandhill Cranes. It got to within about 15 yards, calmly hunting for breakfast as it came. This was a first!
