They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).

The boys knew what Owls looked like, they saw Screech Owls (and Barred and Great Horned Owls) at a local wildlife park, and we photographed Burrowing Owl families every year at Brian Piccolo Park. The Pigeon has spawned an empire of books, DVDs, plush toys, games, and musical theater. So, they knew that these were Real Owls.

Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!

Great wildlife preserves, reserves and parks exist for a number of reasons. Madikwe may have been farmland once upon a time but these days it has been fully restored as an astonishing game reserve. Madikwe has perhaps too many elephants. A Shaft-tailed Whydah, a member of a small African family of cuckoo-finches.

The definition of the word HUNT is “to chase or search for game or other wild animals for the purpose of catching or killing.” Lacey of Iowa introduced the nation’s first wildlife-protection law, which banned the interstate shipping of unlawfully killed game. People don’t respect wildlife.
