The magnificent view from the Cliff House includes the Seal Rocks just offshore. Isla Rasa was declared a sanctuary in 1964, and egg-collecting and disturbance during the breeding season are discouraged. It’s all of the things I learn about different birds from researching to write posts.

When one Chinese researcher was very bored, he had a bright idea: Why not publish a paper on the complete mitochondrial genome of the Rhinoceros Hornbill ? Like the other hornbills, it nests in a tree cavity, in which the female seals herself in using droppings and food remains. The Wreathed Hornbill is also listed as Vulnerable.

Or, Pygmy leaf-folding frogs, Afrixalus brachycnemis, from Tanzania, tiny climbing frogs who lay their eggs in leaves and then fold the leaves over them for protection, sealing the nest with secretions. A book about all the frogs and toads of the world is an ambitious undertaking.
