Charles Pease shot the bird in northeastern Ohio, and gave it to his father-in-law, Jared Kirtland, one of those 19th century men who was a master multitasker–physician, horticulturist, legislator, zoologist. A nest wasn’t found until 1903, which set off a craze for Kirtland’s Warbler skins, nests, and eggs.
