Baird’s Sparrow by Seagull Steve Julie’s was not a wild bird, well, at least not one that lived outdoors: My Best Bird of the Year, and the 22 preceding, was Charlie, a Chestnut-fronted Macaw I got as a captive-raised fledgling in 1989. What’s not to like about an owl that lives underground?

Like a shy stepchild, it’s always eclipsed by the wonders of Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, etc. Plate 97: Andean and partly Andean antshrikes, illustrated by Oscar Tintaya. Bolivia doesn’t come up much in discussions of birding travel. Tintaya’s woodpeckers also nicely feature tree (and cactus!)

Corey was lucky enough to meet Carlos while birding in Ecuador , where Carlos was dragooned into accompanying the horde of Queens birders for the day, an encounter that somehow didn’t turn him off of all things New York. Just keep an eye out for the Barred Owl perched on a Mini Cooper and that is where you will find him.

I guess you cannot be too choosy while traveling, as I have learned when on trips in Ecuador and other places. The Oriental Scops Owl may well be my favorite species passing through Nanhui, Shanghai during migration. The theory behind this is that if you give a young bird a name like this, it will be inspirational for them.

This of course raises questions of what happens when all of the inland nesting grounds of all the loons becomes covered with glacial ice during ice ages, then later, the ice melts and the lakes return. Painted Buntings and nesting owls, Black-headed Gulls and mystery empids. Good work, New York, good work.
