Phoebe Snetsinger was an American birder who first passed the 8,000 species mark. Famous ornithologist Ted Parker crashed into a mountain in Ecuador while surveying birds. She died in a car accident during a birding trip. And one of the first stories in her biography is how her friend died of altitude sickness. And so forth.
