In many cases, myself included, the desire manifests itself in less apparent ways than going out and killing something for the trophy wall. I don’t need to kill something to feel the rush of the hunt. For me there are few experiences more satisfying than releasing a fish that has put up a great fight.

He subsequently leaves for Peru and gets kidnapped and killed by Sendero Luminoso – the local brand of Maoists. Famous ornithologist Ted Parker crashed into a mountain in Ecuador while surveying birds. Having learned from my Namibian experience I walked away briskly. She died in a car accident during a birding trip.

I guess you cannot be too choosy while traveling, as I have learned when on trips in Ecuador and other places. The Eurasian Wryneck also struggles a bit with regard to colors – it still looks like an experiment in different, not quite matching patterns of various shades of brown.
