During our tenure there, we had exceptional views of Africa’s largest ( Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl ) and smallest ( African Scops Owl ) owls, the largest bird on the planet, not neglecting numerous hornbills, sunbirds and weavers. Along the track, the shimmering scarlet gorget of a Hunter’s Sunbird shone like a beacon.

If you haven’t learned their specific vocabulary, you wouldn’t even understand what the heck two hunters are talking about.

Out and About with the Cumberland Bird Observers Club

After we got back to the cars everyone pulled chairs out and sat down for a cup of tea (I had neglected to bring some but was not to go without thanks to the hospitality of these fine people). I must have been very lucky with my timing because I was there when swamp mahoganies were flowering and this brings the nectar hunters in droves.
