Elephants used to cross the border here before the war, but the fighting increased incidents of poaching as law and order broke down, leading to highly traumatised elephants crossing the border. It was pretty awesome to see so many tuskers, as well as families of elephants safe in their special park.

Birding Tongbiguan, Yunnan (part 2)

Said Blue-throated Barbet – maybe lacking an altimeter – indeed could be seen very close to its family member at Tongbiguan. It is also quite good at mimicry, imitating species such as the Crested Serpent-eagle, the Javan Cuckoo-shrike and the Orange-bellied Leafbird. Ok, I made that up.

Having flown to Washington State on a family vacation the first obstacle was easily out of the way, which you knew already if you ever read this blog. Bald Eagles competed with hauled out Harbor Seals for our attention and we were told that the concentration of eagles was due to the salmon not yet running in the rivers.
