For one, they are remarkably diverse with a little over 380 species spread over every continent except Europe (only introduced) and Antarctica. With their strong flight and capability to disperse, parrots have managed to colonize almost every major island group from Tahiti to Mauritius to Dominica. I am a self-proclaimed psittacophile.

Originally, I was going to highlight one of the species endemic to the islands of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean; but once I typed in “Lesser Antillean”, six species popped up. Interestingly, this species has been split into two distinct subspecies, one for each of the islands on which it is found.

Despite recording 370 species during the month, the list total has advanced by just 45. Just to confuse things a little, only 14 new species were recorded since June 1 st. American Golden-Plover – Pluvialis dominica. Yellow-throated Warbler – Setophaga dominica. As at June 30 th , it stands at 1796.
