A New York Times story that ran in 2001 about a homeless dog wandering around a suburban part of New York City, struck a chord with me. It took nine years for my picture book, THE BLUE HOUSE DOG, (Peachtree Publishers/August 1, 2010) to come out. The boy was wounded by his loss, just as the homeless dog was wounded when his owner died.

The park was created as much to protect the local communities from marauding elephants with a hatred of dangerous humans and a lack of interest in the differences between nations as it was to protect the elephants. The park did have a pack of African Wild Dogs, or Painted Wolves, the species I had gone to Africa to see.
