Much like every beautiful sandy beach, the human encroachment is substantial. The State of Oregon, in 1975 listed the bird as Threatened, and the Oregon Fish and Wildlife reaffirmed that status in 1989 under the Oregon Endangered Species Act. org [link] The American Bird Conservancy [link] and Defenders of Wildlife [link].
