Animals raised for food suffer miserably. After time in the Marines, I veered strongly away from eating creatures, thinking of their suffering. Egg production, including on free-range farms, entails the mass killing of newborn male chicks, a point made in Nicholas D. I was 4 or 5, and I cringed. Kristof’s column.

The reason that the industry is losing the argument is quite simple: There is no ethical justification for causing an animal to suffer unnecessarily. We can refuse to purchase products of pain deceptively marketed as "humane." Hence the need for each one of us to stop buying the products of modern animal farming.

Virtually everyone agrees that: (1) It is wrong to cause a conscious sentient animal to suffer for no good reason. Causing an animal to suffer for no good reason is cruel, and our ordinary commonsense morality tells us in no uncertain terms that cruelty is wrong. Most people hold that it is wrong to cause animals unnecessary suffering.
