And is video of a cow being pummeled to death with a bat worse than a cow being "processed" in a slaughterhouse? When is violence toward an animal in a video gratuitous?

The problem with that statement is it's not as if farmers are searching "the wild" for cows, pigs, chicken and fish, plucking them from their homes, and plopping them on a farm to live out their (shortened) lives prior to slaughter. I do not pass judgment on other species, whose motives I cannot comprehend. Besides, we have choices.

Vegan vegetarians who eat only vegetables, fruit, and nuts do not completely remove all microorganisms from their food, even with repeated cleaning. If someone’s sole reason for abstaining from meat were pain-avoidance, then there would be no reason not to eat these cows. Martin has imagined not human vegetables, but cow vegetables!
