World Farm Animals Day was today. There was a picture on the bus commemorating the event with a picture of a cow looking, dare I say it, noble and long-suffering. Tags: depressed farm animal welfare. Perhaps it's because of gloomy October or maybe it's because I'm getting over the flu, but I felt very sad.

He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. In other words, the proverbial happy farm animal. Factory animals are voiceless victims.

Yesterday, in the comments of An Affront to the Idea of Family , Brian wrote: I understand your concern for those cows that were beat by that man and the unfortunate death of all the cows that died in the snow storm. I love my cows and I don't anyone touch them in that manner. It's a relief to hear that Brian disapproves.

We "traditionally" have applied our social mores in some places and not others, and we should go back to "tradition," which I bet has something to do with continuing to care about our dogs while continuing to feign care for "farm animals," as they're value is as food only. Scott's assumption is that we profit from certain animals.
