One study found that birds living in Botswana had elevated levels of lead in their bloodstreams during hunting season, presumably coming from lead bullets used on animals killed by hunters. For example, this study showed that Malachite Kingfishers spent more time hunting in locations with more fish. ” (HBW).

Nineteen days later we had racked up an amazing list of 436 species, including some of Africa’s least known birds such as Congo Serpent Eagle , Yellow-footed Honeyguide , Tessmann’s Flycatcher , Yellow-bearded Greenbul , Black-collared Lovebird and much besides. And wow, what a trip we had! What makes Ghana so special?

In particular, birds that hang around with humans who don’t happen to hunt or eat them can become very tame. My research in the Congo supports this idea. One was to simply recall that there are many instances of animal tameness, in particular among birds, elsewhere, including in the British Isles.

In the northern winter, the bulk of the European and North African population migrate down into Africa, as far as South Africa, where large numbers frequent fields where they hunt for insects and rodents. They are also attracted by fires and can gather in thousands.
