The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Catholic catechism affirm that compassion for animals is a matter of human dignity. The United Methodist Church supports the humane treatment of farm animals and calls for the protection of endangered species.

While this legislation would be an important step in transforming inhumane animal production, we must also call for change on the federal level, where the farm bill subsidizes this sector to the tune of billions of dollars. I look forward to casting my vote for compassion. Unfortunately, that is unlikely to happen any time soon.
