Mt Bruce, since you ask, is the Department of Conservation’s premier endangered bird breeding centre. The centre now encompasses native bush into which some of these endangered species have been released. (It And on this visit, we were there in time to see feeding for the kiwi chicks the centre was raising.

Delegorgue’s main ornithological contribution was collecting Delegorgue’s Pigeon in the now vanished forests of Durban, but besides this he had little significant input. Wahlberg travelled even more extensively and amassed a huge bird collection. Sundevall named Wahlberg’s Eagle and Wahlberg’s Honeyguide in his memory.

Raising and lowering its head, like stretching. The original specimens were collected in dense jungle, and the recent sightings in more open forest may represent suboptimal habitat. It rotates its head 180 degrees to keep an eye on us. Humbly, we approach on foot. The Forest Owlet is watching us – we are staring in awe.

The genus is Cyanoramphus , and they are sometimes known collectively as the kakariki (literally little kaka). Compared to that of say the Collared Kingfisher , for example, it would hardly raise an eyebrow. Yellow-crowned Parakeet , Cyanoramphus auriceps.
