I used to play Subbuteo as a kid … a kind of tip-kick football game that was named after this species (apparently, the inventors first wanted to name the game “Hobby” but that was rejected as too generic, or so the story goes). The Eurasian Hobby was another notable raptor of the month.

The Nonessential Whooping Crane

That’s what you do with other game, right? You can designate it thus; you can legally call it a Rhode Island Red chicken if you want, but no whooping crane on this planet is nonessential. Why not just shoot the biggest one? The biggest gobbler, the biggest buck… And this? I thought whooping cranes were all white.
