We (we being my friend Ian and Steve from Los Angeles) were a little frantic, thinking we’d never, ever see them again. Favorite Every-Day Bird (Pantanal edition): Our first, very fleeting sight of Guira Cuckoos were fly-bys as we headed out of Alta Floresta towards Cristalino Lodge. Favorite Woodpecker: This is a toughie.

Following passage of the United States Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966, the California Condor ( Gymnogyps californianus ) was among the first 75 species listed for protection, the so-called “Class of 1967”. Part of its obscurity is due to the fiercely protective relationship Cologne has with its beer.

And, because of a special family event (see below), I happened to be in Los Angeles County over the Thanksgiving holiday. There is a small resident population in Polk County, Florida, in the middle of the peninsula, mostly on protected land, and once in a while they show up in a place where they can be easily observed.
