Whooping Crane at Joe Overstreet Road

One of the remaining birds is known to frequent Joe Overstreet Road, a dirt road that runs a few miles through sod farms and cattle pastures between Canoe Creek Road and Lake Kissimmee in Keenansville,about an hour south of Orlando. So, of course, I reached Lake Kissimmee without a Whooping Crane sighting. He likes it there.

Seeing Sociable Lapwing in Kazakhstan

Now, seeing Sociable Lapwing , a species that is critically endangered and thought to number roughly 11,000 individuals, would be a treat any day but to see several pairs on their breeding grounds? Above is the area where the three pairs we observed were nesting which we were told was rather typical for the species.

The Amur Leopard ( Panthera pardus orientalis – above) is just one majestic animal on the Critically Endangered (CR) list with less than 100 individuals in the wild due to hunting for its fur. Asian Elephants and Indian Elephants ( Elephas maximus indicus ) are both listed as Endangered (EN) on the ICUN red list. But I digress.
