Let me tell you – I’ve met some street dogs who curl up with cats and babies, and I’ve met some pet dogs (like my human’s grandmother’s Chihuahua!) Millions of American street dogs (and cats!) Except for the poor pit bulls, street dogs are about the most vilified canines on the planet.

Starting with Casey and Arrow, our keepers in the woods, our family would keep cats and dogs. When he went outside to investigate, he saw a dusty troupe of mottled, almost camouflaged, puppies rolling in the sand, all presided over by a serious, sleek, dark presence—their mother. Growing up, we always had animals.
