Beyond the environmental impacts of meat production there is a basic ethical issue involved. I suspect that meat consumption would decline dramatically under such a code; it would certainly make many of us less hypocritical. However, I agree with Mr. Foer that factory farming has to go. Project Treadstone If anyone in Palm Beach County wants to get involved in the Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) of feral cats, now is the time, as the county's Spay Shuttle is back in business (but for a whopping $40/cat rather than the original $15), and Pahokee ($25/cat) is open as well. It is argued that beef cattle and hogs are protein factories in reserve. Given the people in the world who are hungry or even starving, we should not eat meat, since in eating meat we are, as it were, wasting grain that could be used to feed the hungry people of the world. None of these assumptions seems plausible.

The good news is that if you know someone who needs to be schooled on all of the sordid details of factory farming, and appreciates good writing, this is a great book. And what follows, as you might imagine, is his support of "ethical meat" (for those who insist on eating animals). Ever, in fact.

Many people exclude animals from moral consideration, even though they would never think to neglect, much less harm, a dog or a cat. Perhaps the sympathetic impulse would be activated if people saw how their meat is produced. Have you visited a factory farm or a slaughterhouse? Have you taken the time to investigate this?
