Someone wrote me and, though the person clearly was trolling to insult someone, s/he accused me of not being a vegan because of greyhounds Violet Rays and Charles Hobson Booger, III (no mention of Emily, which made me feel terribly neglectful). The average person doesn't fund programs that cost $8,000 per cat. I find that though utilitarians like Peter Singer do have a certain consistency that lulls me into thinking all is well and fair and just, the flip side of that is a startling neglect of the individual. Many people exclude animals from moral consideration, even though they would never think to neglect, much less harm, a dog or a cat. So I must try to keep my morality open to revision, exposing it to whatever valid pressures there are—including pressures from my sympathies. It is natural to feel sympathy for animals who are suffering.
