In 2021, the American Ornithological Society announced that it has now classified the Bahama Nuthatch as a distinct species, Sitta insularis. He noted that this new bird had longer bills and “darker loral and auricular regions” than the mainland Brown-headed Nuthatch, and collected two of them for science. There’s just one problem.

There was a story this morning that did make my blood freeze, and it had nothing to do with four big cats biting the bullet. Like much of conservation, its the best of a bunch of bad options.

The birdlife in the Cape is nothing short of spectacular, with a healthy dose of charismatic endemic species. Over 40 species of South African endemics can be found in the Cape – Cape Sugarbirds, Cape Rockjumpers, Orange-breasted Sunbirds to name but a few. Part of the 3,000 strong penguin colony at Boulders Beach, Cape Town.
