Some were taken of birds and mammals in zoos or aviaries, others were taken in the wild, often in remote places. Ironically, the bird in the photograph served as the model for the bird in the lithograph; it was killed, skinned, preserved and stuffed a few days after the photograph was taken. The photographs span the years 1870 to 2004.
